heart murmur?
I took The Daughter in to the pediatrician today. I wanted them to look at her ears and tell me if they were healed well enough that she could jump back into swimming lessons. You know it's always a bad sign when the intern does a routine checkup and the doctor comes in 2 mintues later and says "Let me listen to that heart again..."
The Daughter has been diagnosed with a Stills Murmur. As far as I can tell at this point, it isn't much to worry about. However, given that during her sonogram while I was pregnant an intra cardia echogenic foci was found (this is what led first to the level II sonogram and lastly to the amnio to determine if she had Downs Syndrome), the pediatrician believes we should have a pediatric cardiologist look at her heart to determine if this is a concern or not. Did she not have this sonogram finding, he would not be concerned but that she does is reason enough to investigate further. So we have to schedule an appointment to get an ultrasound done. It is never easy to sit in an office and hear that there is anything abnormal with your child. It most certainly is not easy given what we went through with her pregnancy. I'm sad and a little scared.

Julie - I don't know if this will help you or not, but our ped said that Har Simran had a small heart murmur when he was about 10 months old. I know that we didn't have the ultrasound results that you had, but I was still worried about it. We decided not to take him to a cardiologist (mostly because we didn't have insurance and the doc wasn't worried enough to push it). Eventually (I can't remember exactly when YIKES!) it went away. I haven't had him checked in a while maybe I should get my midwife to do it at my next prenatal. ((((HUGS))))

Hi, my son too has been diagnosed with Still's murmur. We took him to the Sanger clinic in Charlotte, NC and found out this name of the murmur. His pediatrician didn't seem to think Russell had anything but a childhood murmur that would go away, but he plays alot of sports and I worried about him, esp when he gave out of breath. We also had secondary ultrasounds done because of family histories and stuff. I did my research about this Still's murmur and it is a normal abnormal heart sound. The cardiologist we saw said there are 5 different normal murmurs in children and Russell has Still's. I hope every thing turns out okay for you and your son, as I believe it will. You are in my thoughts and it's ok to worry...it your child, who wouldn't? Best of luck! Tammy from NC

I just found this site. My 2 year old grandson went to the Doctors today and they found a heart murmur. They told my daughter that he has a Stills murmur. They said this is common and nothing to worry about, but we need to have him checked. We now have to find a pediatric cardiologist. We live in Maryland. Does anyone know of a good one in or around Hagerstown or Baltimore. We live in Allegany County but will gladly make the trip to make sure he is OK. I am a Registered Nurse but haven't dealt with pediatrics. I will pray for all of you as I pray for my grandson. Please keep him in your prayers. His name is Jake.

hi johnny. my daughter sho is 8 now, was diagnosed w/ a stills murmur at 8 months, that was almost 8 yrs ago. our pediatrician sent us to AI DuPont Hospital for Children in wilmington,de. i too live in md., in cecil county. she was xrayed, scanned and ekg-ed. the team of cardiologists were very knowledgeable and thorough. they assured me that the stills murmur was a begnign type. it would not affect her or her activities. it would be more noticeable however during high fevers, childbirth and the like. it has never stopped her from anything and has not effected her life at all. as a matter of fact, at regular check ups it isnt always audible. she is happy, healthy and developing quite normally. i know to hear anything is wrong with a child, especially something as vital as the heart, can be very scary. before the diagnosis my mind was going wild... heart transplant?life long meds.? but from my own experience with a child w/ a stills murmur, jake will be ok. im not a doctor, but when it comes to anything with my kids, i do reseach on top of research, take notes and go armed with a list of questions for the doctor. if you can make the trip, i would strongly reccommend going to AI DuPont Children's Hospital. they are wonderful. my son spent 10 days there with spinal meningitis and not once did i have any complaint with any of the staff. best wishes. i think youll find that you will have a happy healthy grandson who was diagnosed with a benign murmur.
